William James College, a private non-profit graduate school of psychology, is on a mission to make a difference in mental health care for local Massachusetts children. Through its nationally-known, evidence based “Primary Project,” the college provides preventive mental health services designed to enhance positive skills and reduce difficulties for preschool through primary grade children.
Through careful screenings at surrounding elementary schools, participants are identified as children who are at risk for social-emotional or school adjustment problems. Throughout the school year, participants meet with a Child Associate (specially trained and supervised closely by William James College faculty) in individual child-led expressive play sessions, where they become aware of their feelings, experience a sense of self-acceptance, enjoy supportive interaction, and develop positive feelings about school.
